Festival glories in the sunshine

From the archive, first published Monday 19th Jun 2000.

GLORIOUS sunshine beamed down on one of Southampton's biggest festivals this year.

Crowds were treated to a whole array of music and dance performances at Woolston Community Centre on Saturday.

Youngsters in fancy dress got the festival off to a flying start with a parade under the theme of Woolston through the Ages.

Games were staged for children of all ages, including a coconut shy, putting and a human fruit machine.

There were also free workshops, including mask-making by Solent People's Theatre and information about the restoration of a warship moored at Woolston docks into a community radio station for youngsters in Ireland both north and south of the border by charity Pirates for Peace.

Groups performing in the centre's grounds included Woolston Folk Club, Mavis Daniels School of Dance, old time music hall from 1st Woolston Brownies, Southampton Youth Training Brass Band and schools.

Classic cars owned by residents in the area were on display, along with exhibitions by organisations such as the Red Cross Juniors, emergency services and Weston Adventure Playground.

Over the road in St Mark's Church was a flower festival.

The event, run by Woolston Community Association, marked the beginning of Woolston and Weston Week.
