Blueprint for road transport

BETTER public transport and road safety are top priorities for a £350 million plan to meet Hampshire's travel needs over the next decade.

Highway maintenance has been classed as a high priority in one of the biggest surveys ever to be carried out by the county council.

The five-year Local Transport Plan is the first comprehensive strategy for tackling Hampshire's transport problems and has involved consultations with local residents, businesses, transport operators, passengers and district councils.

Nationally Hampshire's provisional plan is recognised as one of the best in the country. On Thursday the extent of the research carried out will be discussed at a seminar organised by the county council at Winchester Guildhall.

Highways experts will also inform delegates of the latest national and regional transport policies, and set out the planned programme of investment in transport infrastructure and services in Hampshire over the next five years.

"A lot of hard work and effort has gone into producing our first LTP to ensure it reflects the needs and aspirations of Hampshire people," said chairman of the planning and transportation committee, Dudley Keep.

"The LTP sets out our policies for tackling the county's transport problems - one of the biggest challenges facing Hampshire - with an integrated transport system to ensure the vibrancy and vitality of our towns and cities, and meet the special needs of our rural areas."

He added: "It will enable us to make further progress in improving public transport, easing congestion and enhancing road safety."

Meanwhile the council hopes its bid for £350 million worth of funding will be approved by the government.
