Heptathlete Ty sets a new world record

From the archive, first published Tuesday 6th Mar 2001.

VETERAN Totton athlete Ty Lewis is the proud owner of a new world record.

The former Southampton & Eastleigh clubman set a global best for the over-50 men's indoor heptathlon at the Scottish National Combined Events & Veteran Championships at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall.

Not only did his score of 5380 beat the previous world record of 5361 points, held by Alan Russell of the USA, but it won him the Scottish open veterans' title by eclipsing both the 40 and 45-year age-groups.

Lewis is no stranger to success having won gold at the 1999 World Veteran Championships where he also finished fourth in both the sprint hurdles and decathlon.

All being well and he is able to secure sponsorship, he will start as one of the favourites for the world veterans' decathlon title at this year's World Championships in Brisbane in July.

Currently based at Marchwood Military Port, Lewis has served over 20 years in the Royal Navy and is an aeronautical engineering instructor in the Ministry of Defence.

His performances at Glasgow were - 60 metres (7.98 seconds), long jump (5.43 metres), shot (9.72 metres), high jump (1.50 metres), 60 metre hurdles (9.50 seconds), pole vault (3.50 metres), 1000 metres (3 minutes 14.65 seconds)
