From the archive, first published Monday 13th Jun 2005.

Multicultural community project Pukaar will host Southampton's first Multicultural Music Festival at the Nuffield Theatre on Saturday, June 25, bringing together inspirational music and entertainment for all ages.

The event will take place in aid of Refugee Week from with local artists and musicians playing world music.

Refugee Week is a UK-wide festival that celebrates the great contribution made by refugees to UK life and promotes understanding of why people become refugees.

Pukaar, the multicultural music project, aims to bring an eclectic mix of entertainment and events to Southampton's busy city residents.

Pukaar's mission is to bring people together through multicultural events for and with local bands, musicians, DJs and the international group of volunteers.

Pukaar also offers music workshops, support to charity events and assistance to the refugee community. The festival will not only provide a platform for new musical talent in and around Southampton and the UK but will be a small attempt at bridging cultural gaps between communities and generations.

Chairman of Pukaar Romail Gulzar hopes that the event will draw together Southampton's multicultural residents to create an evening to remember.

He said: "I hope that this unique event will bring together many residents in the Southampton area. I think it is very important for such a multicultural city to unite, whether they are Asian, African or European. We should all embrace and share our wealth of culture."

The event is FREE for everyone.
