Review - Count on The Count for great performances

From the archive, first published Wednesday 6th Jul 2005.

The story of jealousy and revenge set in 19th century France and Italy is done full justice by this outdoor production.

Full use is made of the many entrances to keep up a slick pace for the suspense and action entailed.

Simon Williams (Dantes) gives an excellent lead performance growing from young innocent to cynical schemer when his revenge is exacted.

His period of imprisonment and the passing of time with his co-prisoner (Brian Fitzmaurice) is one of the highlights of the play.

Good supporting performances come from the large cast with Chris Morrison (Danglars) and Mike Skinner (Ferdinand) particularly notable. The latter's long sword duel with Dantes, choreographed by director Ian Hylands, drew gasps from the audience.

Nadine Redman (Mme de Villefort) and Vicky Redman (Mercedes) were convincing lead female roles.

Runs until Saturday.
