Residents' battle to find a space

From the archive, first published Wednesday 25th Jan 2006.

PARKING restrictions have been extended on a Winchester estate because residents say too many students and workers are parking on their streets.

Lynford Avenue and Lynford Way in Weeke are popular parking spots for commuters hoping to dodge daily car parking fees and students from nearby Peter Symonds College.

Residents say their lives have been blighted by the extra cars, which often leave them with nowhere to park outside their own homes and cause problems for emergency services and other large vehicles.

At a meeting of Winchester City Council's Cabinet, councillors were told residents had seen people being carried from their homes on stretchers because ambulances couldn't get down the road and, on occasions, rubbish trucks have also not been able to get through.

Conservative member Eileen Berry, pictured, who represents Weeke, supported the idea of a single yellow line, saying: "We're going to have a problem.

"There will be a fatality of some sort if something is not done."

Director of development services Steve Tilbury said officers were talking to the college about ways to reduce traffic

He added: "There's no simple solution. It's going to be an ongoing process."

Members decided unanimously to extend the parking restrictions with a single yellow line.
